South Mississippi Ferret Rescue (SMFR) is a small 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Biloxi, Mississippi at our private residents, serving Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and the Florida Panhandle.
We take in ferrets from a variety of situations, provide medical care and rehabilitation, and adopt out select ferrets to approved homes. We are also a sanctuary for special-needs ferrets who require lifelong care.
Our mission is to give every ferret a safe, stable, and compassionate future.
Yes, we are a ferret-specific rescue and only take in ferrets.
All adoptable ferrets can be found under the Adoptable Ferrets tab on our website.
All of our ferrets are surrendered to the rescue, so we never know exactly when new ferrets will become available. Availability can change at any time.
We are located in North Biloxi, Mississippi.
For safety and privacy reasons, we do not publicly share our exact address, as we operate out of a private residence.
The best way to reach us is by email:

No. While some ferrets are available for adoption, others remain in our care as sanctuary ferrets due to age, medical needs, or special circumstances.
We do have specific care requirements, including approved cages and diet standards. Please review the Before You Apply section prior to submitting an application.
No, we do not ship ferrets. Adoptions must be done in person.
If you come across anyone offering to ship a ferret to you, it is very likely a scam. Please be cautious and avoid sending money to unverified sellers.
Yes, we accept surrenders based on space and availability. To begin the process, please go to the Need to Surrender tab on our website and complete the form with your information.
To get started, you will fill out an application under the Adoption tab on our website. Please make sure to include pictures of your setup, as well as the area where the ferret will be playing.
Once submitted, I will review your application and send you an email from southmississippiferretrescue@gmail.com. Be sure to check your junk or spam folder, as emails sometimes end up there. I may ask follow-up questions or clarify information from your application.
If your application looks like a good fit, we will move forward with a phone interview to get a better understanding of your ferret knowledge and expectations.
After that, we will schedule an in-person meet where you will be able to come to the rescue, meet the ferrets available for adoption, and see who may be the best fit. At that point, I will provide my phone number to coordinate.
If you currently have a ferret, we do require a meet and greet between the ferrets before moving forward with adoption.
